Teen and early adult years
Most girls have their first foray into women’s obstetrics and gynecology appointments in their teen years. For this, they will visit a gynecologist or OBGYN, who is trained to care for women’s reproductive systems. Girls should start seeing these doctors either between the ages of 13 and 15 or when they become sexually active.

Your gynecologist will be able to perform a wellness visit, though a Pap Smear will not be needed until later, and answer any questions your teen may have. If they are sexually active, their physician can also discuss birth control options.

Younger adult
Younger adults may see women’s obstetrics and gynecology providers depending on their needs. Their gynecologist can continue to provide wellness care, focusing on women’s reproductive organs. But, should they become pregnant, they will need to switch to an obstetrician’s care if they do not already see an OBGYN (who is trained in both areas). Once the baby is born, your obstetrician will refer you back to your gynecologist.

Older adult
As women move into their 50s and 60s, they will often start to go through menopause, though some women may experience this soon. As women’s obstetrics and gynecology practice is well equipped to help women navigate this change. Your doctor will be able to help alleviate symptoms, while still continuing to perform important checks like breast and pelvic exams.

Seniors
Seniors should still continue to visit their women’s obstetrics and gynecology providers. Though you may not need to go as often, your doctor will still continue to check for signs of disease. Plus, other issues may arise as you age that a gynecologist or OBGYN is better equipped to help you with than a general practitioner.
